Children of the Snow, 2022.

Children of the Snow is an enchanting series of digital photographs I created as the culmination of my Alternative Processes class at Cal Poly Humboldt. This body of work expresses the profound love and gratitude I hold for the close friendships in my life. Within these photographs, I aim to capture the genuine affection and deep connection between my dear friend and former colleague Max, alongside his partner Anton.

Beyond conveying my love for them, these images also aspire to represent their profound love for each other. It is essential for individuals to see themselves reflected in art, finding inspiration and a sense of admiration. Max and Anton, as a same-sex interracial couple, embody the ongoing importance of visibility and validation within the LGBTQIA+ community. Although considerable progress has been achieved, it is still crucial to prioritize the continuing visibility and recognition of individuals within the LGBTQIA+ community within the realm of artworks.

Through this series, I also sought to delve into the concept of young love. Drawing inspiration from the exhilaration of a "snow day," a cherished childhood experience, I aimed to evoke the exuberant energy and carefree spirit associated with those fleeting moments. Reflecting on my childhood, I recall the excitement that heavy snowstorms brought, resulting in school closures and a flurry of adventurous escapades for us children. We would gleefully venture into the snowy landscape, indulging in playful mischief while our parents dutifully went to work. It is this buoyant and youthful essence that I aimed to capture within these photographs.

To further enhance the whimsical and childlike quality of the accompanying book, I deliberately printed the images on various colored papers and left the edges intentionally torn. These artistic choices contribute to an immersive experience that transports viewers to the realm of wonder and innocence that permeates childhood.

Through Children of the Snow, I wholeheartedly invite viewers to embrace the universal emotions of love, joy, and youthful spirit. This series serves as a celebration of cherished friendships while also inspiring a deeper appreciation for the diversity of human connections and the necessity of representation within the realm of art.
