In-Between Realities, 2022.

My photographic series, In-Between Realities, takes inspiration from Haruki Murakami's intriguing short story, Barn Burning. Through my images, I aim to explore the themes of identity, perception, and the blurred boundaries between reality and illusion that Murakami masterfully weaves into his narrative.

In one photograph, a girl dressed as a mime delicately peels an orange, her movements mirroring the act of shedding layers and revealing hidden truths. The mime's artistry embodies the transformative power of performance, inviting viewers to reflect on our masks and the authenticity beneath the surface.

In another image, a male figure in a jean shirt ignites a match. The flickering flame represents the catalyst for the protagonist's obsession with burning barns, symbolizing the destructive forces that simultaneously act as agents of change and renewal. This photograph invites viewers to contemplate the dual nature of fire – it is capacity for destruction and its potential for transformation.

Both images capture moments suspended in time, offering glimpses into an ambiguous realm where reality merges with the imagined. I create an atmospheric and contemplative aesthetic through intentional composition and a subdued color palette. The interplay of light and shadow hints at the complex interconnection between tangible and intangible elements, leaving viewers questioning the nature of their existence. In-Between Realities invites us to explore the enigmatic spaces at the intersection of our conscious and subconscious selves. It prompts viewers to reflect on the fluid nature of truth and the profound impact of perception on our understanding of the world.
